거품 빼기 기품 찾기 Removing Illusion, Recovering Dignity

10년 뒤에 대학교 졸업생들에게 연설할 기회가 있다면 무슨 말을 하고 싶나요?

지난 설교 시간에 봤던 영상에서 덴젤 워싱턴은 “You'll never see a U-Haul behind a hearse / 죽을 때 가져갈 수 있는 게 없다”고 말하며, “그러니 나누자”고 했습니다. ‘돈을 왜 버나?’라는 질문에 대한 대답입니다. 범상치 않은 이 삶의 지혜는 “Put God First / 하나님을 우선시 하라”는 삶의 태도에서 나왔다고 말합니다. 무명 배우에서 시작해서 현재에 이르기까지 실패도 많았지만, 하나님이라는 믿을 구석 안에서 다시 일어설 수 있기에, 실패는 아무것도 안하는 게 아니라 용기 내서 한 발자욱 내딛는 거라고 대학생들을 격려했습니다.

1세기에 고린도에 살았던 크리스천들에게 고민이 있었습니다. ‘고기를 먹어도 되나? 거의 다 우상 신전에서 나온 것들인데?’ 이는 단순한 식사 문제가 아니라, ‘일터에서 성공하고 싶은데 관계를 맺기 위해 어느 정도까지 허용 하나?’하는 삶과 신앙의 문제였습니다.

"그러므로 여러분은 먹든지 마시든지, 무슨 일을 하든지,

모든 것을 하나님의 영광을 위하여 하십시오." (고린도전서 10:31)

첫째, 일에서 거품 빼기! ‘성공하면 다 해결돼’라는 주장, 들키지만 않으면 된다는 태도는 우리가 걷어내야 할 거품입니다. 모든 것을 하나님의 영광을 위하여 하라는 말씀은 무사히 빠져나가는 것이 핵심이 아니라 제대로 사는 것이 핵심이라고 말하기 때문입니다.

둘째, 일에서 기품 찾기! 맨하튼의 한 상사가 신입 직원의 실수를 스스로 뒤집어쓰며 보호해 줬습니다. 이유를 묻자 "예수 그리스도께서 내 짐을 대신 지셨기에, 나도 힘닿는 데까지 남의 짐을 지고 싶습니다”고 대답했답니다. 이것이 일터에서 찾고 싶은 기품입니다. 예수님의 성품을 드러내는 장면이지요. 졸업생들에게 들려줄 수 있는 에피소드이기도 하고요.

이번 주 월요일 아침은 어떠셨나요? 내일 금요일을 맞이하는 심정은 어떠신가요? ‘무엇을 위해 일하나?’ 대답이 있나요? 사실 그다지 별 생각 없나요? ㅎㅎ 기도하기는 하나님의 은혜가 계속해서 깃들어서 어느새 일터에서 하나님의 성품을 드러내고 있는 자신을 발견하게 되시길 축복하며 기도합니다!

If you had the chance to give a speech to college graduates ten years from now, what would you want to say?

In a video we watched during last week’s sermon, Denzel Washington said, “You’ll never see a U-Haul behind a hearse,” meaning that you can’t take anything with you when you die. And so, he said, “Give.” That was his answer to the question, “Why do we make money?” He explained that this uncommon wisdom came from a life posture of “Put God First.” From his beginnings as an unknown actor to where he is now, he experienced many failures. Yet because he had God as his firm foundation, he could always rise again. He encouraged students by saying that failure is not taking a courageous step forward — not trying anything at all.

Christians living in Corinth in the first century also wrestled with a difficult question:
“Can we eat meat when most of it comes from pagan temples?” This was not merely about food. It was really a question about life and faith: “I want to succeed at work, but to what extent should I compromise in order to build relationships?”

"So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do,

do it all for the glory of God." (1 Corinthians 10:31)

First, remove the illusions from work! The belief that “success will solve everything,” or the attitude that “it’s okay as long as you don’t get caught,” are illusions we need to strip away. The command to do everything for the glory of God reminds us that the point is not merely getting by safely, but living rightly.

Second, recover dignity in work! A manager in Manhattan once took responsibility for a new employee’s mistake in order to protect them. When asked why, he replied, “Because Jesus carried my burdens, I also want to carry the burdens of others as much as I can.” This is the kind of dignity we long to see in the workplace — a moment where the character of Jesus is revealed. It is also the kind of story worth sharing with graduates.

Haha. My prayer is that God’s grace would continue to rest upon you, so that one day you may suddenly realize that, in your workplace, you are reflecting the character of God.
